What will the motels of the future look like?

Based on these trends, it will be a lot less of a  “big box” and a lot more of “out of the box” technological innovation and motels design trends show a focus on art, community, and exclusivity. 

Guests crave design that echoes the destination’s character, whether with local art or the architecture itself. In some hotels, space itself is what drives uniqueness, with creative lobby ideas or public areas that showcase nature. 

1. Hyperlocal design: Perhaps influenced by Airbnb’s local focus, guests prefer a design that reflects the unique character of the destination, integrating area artists, or cultural themes. 

 

2. Indoor meets outdoor: Lobbies filled with plants and guestrooms with floor-to-ceiling windows show that guests want a connection to nature even in an urban setting. 

 

3. Experiential social spaces: In an effort to build a sense of community in lobby areas, hotels are becoming more creative with the types of public spaces offered, from shared workspaces to kitchens to game rooms.

 

4. Green motel brands: Motel brands with a holistic focus on eco-friendliness are considered “green”.

 

Perhaps in the next few years, we’ll be able to virtually bungee jump sitting on the bed while measuring how many calories we burned on our t-shirt before printing out a new pair of shoes to wander around the city. Whatever happens, it’ll be exciting to be a part of it.
